Polestar Reveals Its New Coupe

Anticipation has been building for Polestar’s first standalone vehicle, and it’s not been in vain. The Polestar 1 is a super sexy coupe that rides on the same platform as the Volvo S90, but that’s where the similarities end.

First of all, the design is more GT than anything Volvo has ever made. In fact, Jalopnik and others noted the side profile is fairly close to a Mustang. As for details of the design, it’s all Scandinavian simplicity, including the subtle badging in Helvetica. The Polestar 1 has a chiseled, muscular look, and it’s not backed by weak performance.

Instead of making this a pure EV, Polestar smartly started with a hybrid powertrain. A Volvo E-Drive 2.0-liter engine combines with two electric motors, one for each axle. The combined powertrain pounds out 600 horsepower and a jarring 737 lb.-ft. of torque. In other words, this thing is a monster.

Not only should the Polestar 1 be a blast to drive, it will help save gas. In pure electric mode, it can go 90 miles. That’s equivalent to the range of some EVs, and blows away any other plug-in hybrid on the market.

The strangest thing is Polestar won’t sell the Polestar 1. Instead, you pay for a subscription each month. That comes with advantages and drawbacks, so we’ll see how people react to it.
