BMW Sold 10K Electrified Vehicles In September

With Tesla grabbing headlines, many people don’t realize that BMW is an electrification leader. Here’s a nice reminder of that fact: In September, electrified vehicle sales rose to over 10,000 vehicles. It’s a new monthly sales record for the company.

BMW says electrified vehicle sales through September of this year have eclipsed total sales for 2016. So far, 68,687 BMW i, BMW iPerformance, and Mini Electric cars have been bought by customers.

Not too long ago, reports came out that BMW had emphasized to the ranks that Tesla is a very real threat. Perhaps the message has struck home, because BMW seems to have turned up the tempo. In fact, the automaker claims the largest share of the worldwide electrified vehicle market.

According to BMW, the fact that 5 Series plug-in hybrids are available in bigger numbers at dealerships is helping. The company says in certain markets around the world, up to one third of 5 Series sales are 530e models.

If this trend continues, BMW will finish 2017 with over 100,000 electrified car sales.

The plan is for BMW to release plug-in versions of every vehicle in its lineup. Rumors about an i5 sedan keep flying around, with some saying the project is dead. The recent i Vision Dynamics concept reveal is only fueling speculation.
