Every time Fiat Chrysler changes anything on the Jeep line, some fans get all panicky. It’s happening again with the addition of LED headlights and foglights for the 2017 Wranglers, like somehow adding that makes them no longer “real” Jeeps.

Just to clear up some confusion, we’re not talking about the next-gen Wranglers here. 2017 is actually the final model year of the current generation, except for the fact that it will continue to be manufactured side-by-side with the 2018 models next year.

The big question many people are asking is why Jeep’s making this change for the final model year of the JK. To answer that, take a JK on a trail during the dead of night and you’ll have the answer immediately. There’s a reason aftermarket headlights are in high supply for Wranglers of every generation.

Both the Sahara and Rubicon version of the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited are getting LED headlights standard. LED foglights are included with the headlights. According to Jeep Garage, adding LED lights to the lower trims will run you $595, and it’ll be added on by the dealer.

According to Jeep, the new LED headlights provide 63 percent more light output with the low beams on, or 90 percent more with the high beams. They’ll also draw 67 percent less electricity, which is great for adding other power-sucking aftermarket items. There’s no word on how much better the LED foglights are, but expect them to do a good job illuminating dark trails or backroads at night.
