Volkswagen Reveals Aggressive EV Charging Stations Plan

Soon, you could be charging up your EV at one of thousands of chargers planned for across the United States, thanks to Volkswagen. Yes, the automaker that before was letting diesels belch noxious chemicals into the air is now making up for its misdeeds.

These chargers are managed by Electrify America, VW’s EV charging arm. This initial rollout calls for over 2,000 chargers located at 484 stations. All will either be finished or in various stages of construction by the end of next year.

Chargers located next to highways will be of the 350-kW variety. The rest will range from 50-150 kW. We don’t know exactly where all the chargers will be located, but Electrify America did release a general map of planned locations. It pretty much skips states like Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota, along with a big chunk of the South. California looks to get a heavy concentration of chargers.

This plan is in addition to the announcement from April that Electrify America will work with Walmart to install chargers at 100 stores by the middle of next year.

It’s surprising GM hasn’t undertaken an effort like this, considering it keeps hawking the Bolt so hard. Perhaps VW gets that if you want people to buy EVs, you need to make charging them more convenient.
