Volkswagen Is Adding Another Crossover In 2019

Volkswagen is in full swing promoting the Atlas, its new three-row crossover. With the company needing cash and clawing for relevance in the North American market after Dieselgate, adding more crossovers is only logical. While another is coming, it won’t be here for a couple of years.

You probably don’t remember the T-Roc, a concept VW trotted out at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014. Check out the picture above, because it’ll look something like that. A production version is slated to hit European dealerships this summer. For reasons I can’t decipher, Volkswagen things delaying the launch here is a good idea. The Car Connection and others are reporting dealers here had a say in the T-Roc coming to this market, like not bringing it here would’ve been smart?

Technically, the T-Roc is smaller than the Tiguan, filling an important role in a market segment that’s been pretty hot. It should also be the most affordable Volkswagen crossover, so Millennials and retirees should flock to it.

It might not be called the T-Roc, too. After all, Volkswagen broke with its weird crossover naming rules for the Atlas, so this new model could have a normal name Americans can pronounce.

VW will have four crossovers in its product lineup by 2019. Will it be enough to turn things around here? Probably not, but it shouldn’t hurt.
