BMW Is Looking To Thin Out Its Product Lineup
Have you taken the time to look at BMW’s product lineup lately? It’s ridiculously large, with so many niche models you have to wonder if BMW executives have to carry around a handy reference chart on their smartphone to remember them all.
Unfortunately, the fix is something enthusiasts like myself will hate. While Ian Robertson of BMW was speaking with Car and Driver recently, he agreed that the model explosion needs to be rolled back. He went on to say convertibles and coupes are on the chopping block.
To help keep at least one roadster in the lineup, BMW teamed up with Toyota. The upcoming Z5 could still be the last of its kind from BMW, unless people start snatching them up in droves.
Thanks to the popularity of Gran Coupe models, expect to see true BMW coupes start dying off. Shoppers want practicality, even if they’re interested in the sportiness of a coupe, and a Gran Coupe strikes that kind of balance.
If that’s not enough of a slap in the face, BMW Blog is reporting that the brand is launching a new product offensive that starts now and finishes toward the end of next year. Get ready for over 40 new and revised BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce models to hit between then and the end of 2019. The first shot fired is the new 5 Series. We know the X2 and X7 are coming, along with some other possibilities.
