Land Rover to Unveil the All-New Range Rover Velar in New York

It’s not every day that Land Rover adds a new SUV to its iconic lineup. Well, that day will soon be upon us, as the British SUV manufacturer has just announced it’ll unveil a new model at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

Dubbed the Range Rover Velar, which is borrowed from the first-ever Land Rover prototypes in 1969, this new crossover will fill the rather wide void between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. While the details surrounding this new model are very scant, Land Rover did say it’ll feature “elegant simplicity” and a “visually reductive” approach. The presser goes on to mention it’ll use sustainable materials, advanced engineering, and all-new consumer technology.

Land Rover did give us a few teaser images to go off, but even these only give us small clues. From the images, we can see the Velar will feature an all-glass roof that tapers as it approaches the rear of the vehicle, a rear spoiler, and wraparound taillights. It’ll also fall directly between the Evoque and Sport in width, but its tapering glasshouse more closely mimics its smaller sibling.

The mechanical details remain unknown for now, but my guess is that this will be very closely related to the Jaguar F-Pace, so looks for powertrains like what the Jag has. This could include the new-for-2018 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 247 horsepower, the 340-horsepower 3.0-liter and the 180-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long for the official details, as we’ll see it in the metal on March 1. Stay tuned for updates.
