Jeep Has Started Compass Production In India

It’s finally happened: Jeep is making vehicles in India. The first Compass rolled off a production line near Pune. It was a momentous occasion, not only because it means FCA will gain a better foothold in the growing market, but also it’s the first production right-hand-drive Compass in the world.

For now, the plant isn’t in full production mode, which should start in July. The first wave of Compass models should hit Indian dealerships during the fall. For now, shoppers there will get to choose the Sport, Longitude, or Limited. Both diesel and gasoline engines are in the lineup, plus manual and automatic transmission options. Jeep says there are over 50 possible configurations for the Compass for India.

According to Fiat Chrysler, the plant will export right-hand-drive models to markets around the world, like England.

The Compass is joining the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler for a three-vehicle lineup for the Indian market. Considering the rugged nature of many roads in the country, these vehicles should prove to be quite popular.

Diehard Jeep fans might not like this news, but it does help secure the future of the brand. Besides, there are already Jeep plants in Brazil and other foreign countries.
