A New BMW M8 Is Coming

BMW is finally going to be resurrecting the M8 nameplate, according to a new report from BMW Blog. This is coming about as the 8 Series is roaring onto the scene, apparently completely displacing the 6 Series and the M6.

Not content to make one version of the M8, BMW Blog says the automaker will churn out three versions of the M8. One will be a coupe, one a convertible, and one a Gran Coupe.

Don’t expect some monster V-12 engine like in the sole original M8, even thought that would be great. BMW is rumored to be hopping up the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 from the current M5. Supposedly, it will whip out around 600 horsepower and about 500-plus lb.-ft. of torque.

BMW Blog claims the M8 won’t have a DCT. Before you get all excited, it’s also saying a manual transmission isn’t in the cards. Instead, the vehicle will pack an 8-speed automatic from ZF. Hey, at least it’s not a CVT. Apparently, this move is necessary since BMW will be using xDrive on the M8, plus a DCT would wither under the massive torque output. This is a big deal, because in the past BMW scoffed at the idea of using all-wheel drive on M cars, save the X5 M and X6 M. It seems attitudes inside the company are changing.
