Honda Could Go AWD For Civic Type R

From the moment Honda announced the new Civic Type R, I was disappointed it was a front-wheel-drive car. I wasn’t surprised, sadly, because Honda continues to have an undying love of understeer. But a new report from Automotive News makes me think Honda might finally be seeing the light.

Supposedly, Honda is toying with the idea of making an all-wheel-drive Civic Type R. That makes sense, in my opinion. It also is considering a hardcore version of the car, plus a softer one for people who just want to look cool, but are scared of too much performance.

Both Chevy and Porsche use this multi-model strategy with performance vehicles, and it works well. After all, different strokes for different folks, or something like that.

Automotive News got confirmation from Hideki Matsumoto, the chief engineer of the Civic line, that different versions of the Type R are being tossed around. According to the man, a high-powered, more track-focused version is at the top of the list.

Even though an all-wheel-drive Honda Civic is the least likely scenario, I can always hope. I have a funny feeling more people would consider the car with this option, but I’m definitely biased.
