Jaguar’s First Electric Vehicle Hits Public Roads for the First Time

Jaguar is working toward creating the first real-world competition for the Tesla Model X, and it recently took a big step by taking its concept electric crossover out for a stroll on public roads.

The Jaguar team took the concept I-Pace to London’s famed Olympic Park for a leisurely stroll down the street. According to Jag’s director of design, Ian Callum, “Driving the concept on the streets is really important for the design team.”

While there are no additional details about Jag’s first-ever electric concept crossover, the automaker did reaffirm some details about it. Under its hood, the I-Pace boasts two electric motors (one on the front axle and one on the rear) that combine to crank out 400 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. This potent electric powertrain sprints the I-Pace to 60 mph in about four seconds, making it quicker than the Model X 100D.

Fueling the electric motors is a 90-kW lithium-ion battery that allows the I-Pace to keep rolling for about 220 on U.S. testing cycles, which is slightly under the Model X 75D’s 237-mile range. Once you’re outta juice, this rig takes only 90 minutes to charge to 80% and just over two hours to get up to 100%.

Jaguar expects to have a production version of the I-Pace out and ready for delivery in 2018. The specific timetable of pricing is still unavailable.
