Tesla Announces Aggressive Charging Station Expansion

With Tesla looking to sell a ton of Model 3s, one obvious problem is that the Superchargers could become super crowded. Not to worry, because the California automaker has been thinking the same thing, which is why it’s announced an aggressive expansion of those charging stations.

Tesla’s plan calls for adding several dozen new chargers per station. They’ll also be installing what’s being called customer centers. The total number of Superchargers Tesla is targeting comes in at 10,000. Also, the company wants to quadruple the number of Destination chargers.

As you can see from the picture, Tesla’s not looking to overtax electrical grids with this project. Remember, the company makes solar panels, and it’s using those to charge up this upswing in vehicles.

If you think this is a rollout that will take years, think again. According to Tesla, we should see quite a few of these updated stations by the summer, just in time for the Model 3 launch. Considering Tesla has been quick about expanding the Supercharger network, I wouldn’t bet against the company on this goal.

Of course, the majority of these new Supercharger stations are going into the California market. That makes sense, because Teslas are everywhere there. They’ll also be arriving in other areas of the country, making going road tripping in your Tesla far more practical.
