2017 BMW 5 Series Snags Top Safety Award

If safety’s a big deal to you, and you’re in the market for a new luxury sedan, you might want to consider the 2017 BMW 5 Series. Thanks to a redesign, this Bimmer captured the coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating.

You might not know, but the previous generation of the 5 Series pretty much sucked at the notoriously difficult small overlap test, which simulates the front corner of the bumper hitting a pole, tree, etc.

This time around, the sedan bagged good crashworthiness scores all around. Even more impressive, it earned a superior rating for both optional front crash prevention systems. For the latest component added to the list of qualifications from IIHS, headlight performance, the 5 Series snagged a good rating. That was with the upgraded headlights, while the base headlights landed just a marginal rating.

Of course, crash tests don’t always determine real world performance. It’s best to not test out how well your vehicle handles collisions, and just put your phone down until you get to where you’re going. Please.
