Mercedes Is Using X-Ray Vision To Improve Vehicle Crash Results

Historically, one of the innovators in safety technology for the automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz is at it again. This time, the company has revealed it’s successfully using X-ray vision to better analyze the results of crash tests. What that means is your new C-Class, GLE, etc. could save your life, or spare you from serious injury.

This innovative use of something that’s been around for a long time comes via the automaker’s i-protect Tech Center. It captures super clear images of how different components inside the car are reacting to crash forces each second of the test.

While it’s true that automakers use computer models in the initial stages of safety development, this is part of the physical round of testing. The cool thing about the X-ray images is Mercedes-Benz can take the data from them and compare that with the computer simulation results to improve the virtual tests.

Mercedes-Benz is using this tech to rethink the seatbelt. Apparently, the company thinks with autonomous vehicles, our current designs won’t be relevant anymore.
