Tesla Cuts the Model S 60 After Just a Year on the Market

Last year, Tesla added new versions of the Model S with smaller battery capacities and price tags. These models, which are known as the Models S 60 and 60D, gave buyers a lower entry point of $71,300 and $76,300, respectively, but after only a year on the market, Tesla is axing them.

According to Tesla’s press release, buyers tended to gravitate toward the $6,500 more expensive 75-kWh versions of the Model S, and this is what sparked the 60-kWh model’s elimination. When its elimination is official, the new base model will become the Model S 75.

Tesla also announced that owners of the 60-kWh model can get an over-the-air upgrade of their battery to unleash the 75-kWh capacity (yes, Tesla electronically sandbags its batteries), but it didn’t mention at what cost. From the sounds of it, this may be a free upgrade, which would be freaking amazing, but I have my doubts.

If for some reason you had your heart set on a 60-kWh version of the Model S, you’d better act fast, as Tesla will officially put it to pasture on April 16, 2017.

Other than this elimination and this announcement, there is nothing new on the Tesla front. But with the Model 3 deliveries set to kick off next year, I am sure there is plenty of news in the works. Stay tuned for updates.
