Porsche Mission E Price Should Make Tesla Sweat

If you wondered what keeps Elon Musk up at night, the answer may now be Porsche. The Germans are coming for Tesla in a big way, starting with the Mission E. While the concept looks great, we now know from Porsche CEO Oliver Blume that it should be priced at about $85,000.

Not only does that price put the Mission E on par with the average Tesla Model S, it matches what you’ll shell out for a Panamera. This car could be the first real competitor for the aging Model S, which has been Tesla’s bread and butter.

The Mission E should have a pretty compelling package by the time it arrives in 2020. Apparently, the 350-kW battery will only take 15 minutes to recharge to 80 percent, which also edges out Tesla’s charge rate using a Supercharger. Range should be about 300 miles, while 0-60 acceleration reportedly will take 3.5 seconds and top speed will be 155 mph.

Expect there to be Mission E S and GTS models. Range and power will almost certainly get bumps.

We don’t know enough about the Mission E to declare it a “Tesla killer” – whatever that means. But it likely will feature superior build quality and handling dynamics, making it a bigger hit with enthusiasts. It also should give Porsche a strong foothold in the EV market.
