Geely Buys Lotus

In case you haven’t been aware, Lotus has been in some financial dire straights lately. While things have gotten a little better, talk of it being the next Saab story hasn’t stopped, until now. Geely, the Chinese owners of Volvo, have come to the rescue of this historic British brand, too.

That’s right folks. You’re probably going to see Lotus adding lightness like never before. This is some of the best news in the industry for a long time. Lotus cars are among the most engaging, hardcore enthusiast models you can get, and I’ve been worried they would be going away. At a time when far too many people want a car that makes them feel like they’re not driving, or does all the work for them, Lotus is more unique and necessary than ever.

The finalization of the purchase agreement is coming in the middle of July, according to a Lotus press release. Already, the company says it’s planning an aggressive product rollout. In other words, Lotus has been wanting to do more, but limited funds were holding it back.

Volvo has seen a complete turnaround under Geely ownership. If Lotus pulls off a similar move, the result could be some amazing track cars you would drive around town, and the masses would think is some sort of a Ferrari. Without Lotus, the automotive industry would be less cheery, and we’ll never know what that bleak outlook would be like.
