Nissan Introduces Faraday Cage Armrests

Often the simplest solutions are the best, and Nissan has found an old school way to reduce driver distraction. In the UK, it’s promoting a concept called the Nissan Signal Shield. You put your phone inside this device, and it won’t be making noise from alerts, so there’s zero temptation to use it while driving.

In reality, the Signal Shield is a center console designed to be a Faraday Cage. You can get all kinds of items on Amazon and other stores that do the same thing, including zipper bags.

Nissan is pushing this concept as a “digital detox.” Considering how many accidents mobile device use contributes to each year, it isn’t a bad idea. If only people would realize they can make their own for cheap now.

The one potential problem I can see with this Signal Shield is if a person forgets their phone is in there. You’d have to be really absent minded and not come to the logical conclusion it’s in the car still, but some people are that way. Because the console blocks signals, you couldn’t track your phone.

Nissan hasn’t decided if it’ll make this option available in any production cars. If it cuts down on people doing stupid things while driving, I’m all for it.
