VW Reveals More Efficient And Powerful 2.0-Liter TSI Engine

Volkswagen has revealed a big update to its popular EA888 four-cylinder engine. By toying with the four-stroke cycle, the Germans are squeezing out more power, while boosting efficiency and throttle response. And they’re hoping good news like this helps make Dieselgate seem more distant.

One of the central elements is a unique Miller cycle Volkswagen claims caters to how most people drive each day. That should mean fewer stops at the pump, but we don’t have any fuel economy estimates quite yet. Instead of the intake valves closing just before the end of the intake stroke, they close even earlier in this engine. VW calls this new cycle the Budack. The automaker claims a few benefits with the design, including faster intake flow, longer effective combustion, and better torque production.

To achieve all this, Volkswagen redid the engine block, cylinder head, pistons, and valve springs.

This new generation of the engine displaces 2.0 liters instead of 1.8. Torque jumps 20 percent to a maximum 221 lb.-ft. Once again, German engineering triumphs. You should see this engine on many Volkswagens, including the Jetta, Passat, Beetle, and Golf family. First, it’s making a debut as the only engine for the 2018 Tiguan. After that, it will trickle into the other product lines.
