Update Brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to 2016 Ford Models

I wear my love for Android Auto on my sleeve. As for Apple CarPlay, I am not too sure, as I’ve never had the chance to tinker with it. But I assume it is as good and the Android OS. In 2017, Ford added compatibility with these two operating systems to its still-new Sync 3 infotainment system. Well, this left 2016 Sync 3 users out in the cold. Ford is set to make this right by bringing the Apple and Android systems to owners of 2016 models.

Ford will offer the free upgrade to the newest Sync 3 version 2.2, which includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Owners can get the upgrade in three ways: downloading and uploading via a USB drive, visiting their local Ford dealer, or, for the first time ever by Ford, download it through Wi-Fi.

If you choose to use the old-school USB drive method, you can download the new software at owner.ford.com, then simply follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to install it. For those downloading via Wi-Fi, simply set your Sync 3 system to update automatically, and it’ll download and install the update ASAP. Unfortunately, my Ford Focus ST is a 2014, so it still has the clunky Ford Sync system and not the new, streamlined Sync 3. So, I am still stuck with no Android Auto on my personal car. Boo…
