Porsche Readying A Big Engine For The Next Cayman GT4
You know what the next Cayman GT4 needs? More power! Fortunately, Porsche seems to agree, if you believe a recent report from Autocar.
This comes after the 718 Cayman lapped the ‘Ring in about the same time as the current GT4 model. Do you think Porsche engineers will stand for that? Of course not.
Porsche probably planned for the 718 Cayman to embarrass the GT4, just so there’d be an excuse to drop in a massively powerful engine. Autocar’s anonymous source says that engine will be a 4.0-liter flat-six. The result will be called the GT4 RS.
If true, that would be unbelievable. In fact, it almost sounds too good to be true. After all, a 4.0-liter flat-six is already being used in the GT3 RS and 911 R, so there’s no way Porsche would drop that in the Cayman, right?
Considering all that power engineers have squeezed from a turbocharged four-banger for the 718 Cayman, and the fact the GT4 can’t have forced induction, it seems logical the next solution is to go large. 4.0 liters could be overkill, but who am I to judge? Soon, orthopedic surgeons with little track experience and too much money will be spinning these babies into the wall at their local track, and it’ll be awesome.
