An All-Electric Q3 With an E-Golf Heart is in the Works

Audi RS Q3 performanceAudi is hard at work on a new-generation Q3 crossover. This new people hauler will gain a new look, be a little lighter and it’ll be a little more upmarket. According to a report from AutoExpress, it’ll also gain a new all-electric powertrain.

The report claims that the new Q3’s entire underpinnings will be closely related to the recently reworked Golf, including the all-electric model. This means, the electric Q3 will likely carry the same powertrain as the e-Golf, which now produces 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. On top of the increased power, the new e-Golf also has a larger 35.8 kWh battery for an increased range of 124 miles.

There is a good possibility that Audi won’t be satisfied with this powertrain and improve it a bit. I wouldn’t be shocked to see somewhere in the 150-horsepower range and maybe even a larger battery to eclipse the 130-mile range. Even if cannot improve the range much, the e-Golf luckily has quick-charge capabilities that get its battery to 80% within an hour, which will almost certainly carry over to the Q3.

According to reports, the new Q3 will hit European showrooms in late-2017 or early-2018. Given Audi’s usual release schedules, we’ll likely see the U.S.-spec new-gen Q3 in 2019. As for the rumored all-electric model, that could take even longer to make its way to our shores.
