When you’re Ken Block’s mechanic, plus have an impressive resume, you can build pretty much any car you like. That’s why Gregg Hamilton was able to take his dream car, a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, and turn it into a fire-breathing chicken.

Petrolicious was able to profile the man and his car, which are both pretty amazing. According to Hamilton, he hasn’t actually thrown his car on a dyno, but he thinks it can give a Corvette ZO6 a beating. That sounds impressive, especially for something that’s not known for being especially potent.

At the heart of the Pontiac is a 5.3-liter LS V-8 truck engine, with a twin-turbo setup that provides 10 psi of boost. Other modifications include a twin-plate clutch, big brakes and meaty sway bars so it doesn’t handle like complete crap.

It’s an interesting choice for a guy who’s used to working on Subarus. No doubt Smokey and the Bandit has something to do with it.
