If the Mitsu Mirage Hatch isn’t Enough Hideousness, Now There is a Sedan Version

When the Mirage hatchback initially hit the market, it was lambasted for its dated looks and subpar build quality. Mitsu tried polishing it by installing a new nose, but it was still quite underwhelming. So, what better way to rectify this than to make an equally hideous Mirage sedan known as the G4? Clearly, Mitsubishi thinks this is a great idea as it revealed the Mirage G4 at the New York Auto Show.

Oddly enough, the Mirage G4 doesn’t share any of its looks with its hatchback sibling, and this doesn’t mean it looks any better. The Mirage G4 is just as cringe-worthy—if not more so—as the hatchback version. Its basic design language still looks like something ripped straight from the late 1990s and the grinning lower grille makes it look like it belongs in a Pixar movie. Maybe that’s the demographic Mitsubishi is targeting…

Inside, the Mirage G4 is what it is. It’s a subcompact econo-rig designed to give buyers on a budget the ability to buy a new car. It does have a few decent features, like its dual-zone climate control and its available display audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As a whole, however, this is a cheap car that doesn’t try to hide its intentions.

Under its tiny hood lies a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine that that manages to squeeze out 78 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque. This low-power engine will likely match the hatchback’s 11.7-second crawl to 60 mph. There is a bright side, however, as the Mirage G4 will get up to 42 mpg highway with the continuously variable transmission and up to 40 mpg with the manual gearbox.

Mitsubishi has yet to announce an anticipated on-sale date for the 2017 Mirage G4, nor has it announced its pricing. Stay tuned for more.
