Honda Shows Off Civic Hatchback Prototype

The US market is finally getting another hatchback version of the Honda Civic. To celebrate this fact, the company showed off the 2017 Civic Hatchback Prototype in New York, which is obviously pretty close to the production version of the car.

Compared to the current 9th-generation hatch, this prototype is 5.1 inches longer, 1.8 inches winder and 0.7 inches lower. It also looks way better.

If the 2016 Civic Coupe is any indication, this production hatchback should be a blast to drive. In a move that can only be labeled as smart, Honda’s not even offering the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine you can get on lower trims of the Coupe and Sedan, going with only the turbo 1.5-liter for snappier acceleration. You’ll also be able to get a 6-speed manual transmission as an option, because someone at Honda has actually been listening to enthusiasts for a change.

Both the Si and Type-R versions of the Civic will be hatchbacks, and that looks to be a really good thing. It looks like Honda actually wants to be cool again.

The great thing about the Civic Hatchback Prototype is it looks great, yet should be pretty practical for everyday life. By the end of this year the production version should be sitting in Honda showrooms in the United States.
