Try not to laugh too hard, but BMW apparently wants you to think of the i3 as an electric hot hatch. Yes, that’s right, the weird-looking little EV could be the next car you lust after, zero emissions and all.

We know BMW is making some changes to the i3 for a second generation. Considering sales have been disappointing, something’s gotta give. According to an Autocar report, one of the tweaks will be a far more powerful top-of-the-line version of the car, called the i3S.

Right now, the little electric Bimmer cranks out a mere 170 horsepower. That might not sound like much, but it can keep up with a Fiesta ST in 0 to 60 acceleration. Handling is also above average. So what does BMW have in mind?

At the very least, expect a “sporty” exterior. Hopefully that’s not where the special treatment stops for the i3S. What we really need are hardcore autocross-worthy EVs.

If there’s any truth to this report, which there just might be, we should see the i3S revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year.
