It’s been long overdue, but Mazda has finally revealed the redesigned CX-5. Along with this redesign comes new technology and a new engine that few expected to see here in the U.S.

The looks of the new CX-5 are exactly as I expected: They closely mimic the new KODO look of the CX-9 and CX-3. In addition to its sleeker lines and swoopy roof, this middle child will gain the thinner headlights, longer nose, updated grille, new taillights, and new bumpers that come with the KODO package.

Mazda has also completely revamped the CX-5’s interior. Some of the changes include the shift knob sitting 40 to 60 mm higher in the automatic and manual models, respectively, outward vision improved through the rearward positioning of the A-pillars, new two-step reclining rear seats, a lower hip point when seated, a new 7-inch display, a 10-speaker sound system, and more.

Under its hood, the new CX-5 will feature the typical 2.0- and 2.5-liter SKYACTIV engines. While power increases from these engines are unlikely, I wouldn’t be shocked to see fuel economy increases. The big news, however, is that this new-generation CX-5 will gain a 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D diesel engine in the second half of 2017. The details surrounding this engine are still a long way away, but the European-spec version of this engine produces a respectable 148 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque while delivering incredible fuel economy.

Helping the new CX-5 handle a little better will be Mazda’s new G-Vectoring Control, which is also included on the new Mazda3. It 15% more rigid body will help out too.

There is no mention of exactly when the 2018 CX-5 will hit showrooms, but it will be after its Japanese launch in February 2017.

Stay tuned for updates.
