BBR Turns its Focus to the ND MX-5 Miata
The fourth-generation MX-5 Miata has earned itself a place in the hearts of Mazda fans around the world. Today, fans in the U.K. learned that its home-country Mazda tuner, BBR, will release a trio of new power upgrades and several chassis upgrades for the new Miata.

The BBR upgrades begin with the Super 160 kit for the 1.5-liter-equipped version of the roadster. This kit includes a BBR Starchip ECU upgrade, an optimized camshaft, and revised ignition and fuel systems that help the small engine pull all the way through the rev band. The end result is an extra 21 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque, putting the roadster at 158 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque.
The second power upgrade BBR offers is the Super 175+, which is for the 2.0-liter versions of the Miata. This kit includes all of the same upgrades as the Super 160 kit, but it pushes the output of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder up by 17 horsepower, putting it at 177 horses. It also ups torque by 10 pound-feet to 158 pound-feet. This kit and the Super 160 run £495 ($739) with installation.
The top-of-the-line tune for the 2.0-liter engine is the Super 190, which builds on the Super 175+ kit. In addition to the features in the 175+ kit, the 190 kit includes a cold-air intake system, an optimized exhaust manifold with 2.5-inch outlet, and a Grand Tourer stainless steel muffler with two 2.75-inch tailpipes all from BBR. This kit bumps the 2.0-liter’s output by 30 ponies to 190 horsepower and its torque by 24 pound-feet to 172 pound-feet. This upgrade will set you back £1,995 ($2,978) with installation or £1,795 ($2,680) for a DIY kit.
There are also a few available options for the Super 190 kit, including a 4 kg (8.8-pound) lighter BBR muffler and a 4-1 stainless-steel manifold that adds an extra 2 horsepower.
Available upgrades to the chassis include performance springs to reduce body roll and reduce its ride height by 30 mm (1.18 inches), upgraded road and track front brake pads, and various wheel and tire packages. The springs run £495 ($739) with installation or £195 ($291) for a DIY kit, and the brakes run £195 ($291) installed or £150 ($224) as a DIY kit.
These kits are all available now, and I am certain that BBR will roll out more upgrades as time goes on.
