Volvo has the safety side of automobile manufacturing down, but style has never been its strongest point. With the recent release of the fully redesigned XC90, it is bucking its vanilla styling and taking on a more shapely language, and this change will continue with the upcoming S90 sedan. Today, we bring you spy shots we snapped of the S90 testing outside Munich during a trip to Europe.

Styling is not the only thing the new S90 will borrow from the XC90, as it will also share Volvo’s flexible SPA platform with the crossover. It will also likely borrow one, or more, drivetrains from the XC90, including its potent and thrifty four-bangers like the 316-horsepower T6 and the T8 plug-in hybrid that pounds out 400 electrified ponies.

Unfortunately, the car we caught testing is still under heavy cladding and camo, so we didn’t get a great look at it. However, it is no mystery what the new S90 will look like, thanks to a leaked image of a scale model (above). This tiny mockup displays the Thor’s Hammer headlights, which are visible in the spy shots, the typical Volvo waterfall grille, a long hood, and a fastback-like rake to its rear glass. Many of these styling cues were present in the Concept Coupe that we saw in 2013.

The S90 should arrive in time for the 2017 model year and replace the existing S80. Look for the S90 to start out at more than $50,000 for the base model and clear $70,000 for the T8 model.

Given we are only a short time away from the debut of the S90, and since this concept appears to be in production form under that cladding, we should start hear rumblings of a debut at an upcoming show. Stay tuned for more details.

Style not a big part, eh? C30, S60, V60, XC60, XC90. Oh, oh, a few leftover XC70′s on lots are kinda old looking. You must mean those.

I am not saying that Volvos are ugly, just that styling was never the no. 1 priority for the brand. They’ve long had simple and classy designs, but nothing head-turning. :) The latest models, like the XC90 and the upcoming S90, are bucking this trend.
