Miata Rumored to Gain a Hardtop in New York

When the new-generation Miata debuted, Mazda got people excited by its back-to-roots approach of making it lighter and smaller than recent versions. One thing that was missing, however, was the hardtop model that so many people fell in love with. Now, after sending out a mailer to a number of journalists—myself included—it seems like the automaker is primed to finally add a retractable hardtop to the roadster.

The mailer came with two pieces. One piece-the piece the mistakenly got thrown away-was a card just talking about Mazda coming to the New York Auto Show. The other piece was a cleverly folded paper that when opened had written on it, “Help us blow the lid off at the New York Auto Show. Stay tuned…”
While this doesn’t specifically announce a hardtop version of the Miata, it does point me in that direction. Mazda has no other vehicle that really qualifies for a convertible top, so the only logical thought is that the Japanese automaker is referring to something new with the Miata.
There is also the outside possibility that the “blow the lid off” statement doesn’t refer to changing of the top. Maybe it is a change in engine that will “blow the lid off.” This leads to the very unlikely possibility that Mazda will revive the Mazdaspeed Miata. It already has the perfect donor engine in the 2.5-liter turbocharged Skyactiv-G in the upcoming CX-9, but I still don’t recommend holding your breath for this one.
The New York Show just around the corner—press days start on March 23rd—so we don’t have to wait too long to see what Mazda has up its sleeve.
