Some folks may not realize this, but VW actually has the sedan equivalent of the famous Golf GTI. This would be the peppy Jetta GLI, and for 2016, it is the subject of a slight refresh.

Under the skin, things remain pretty much the same. The powerplant checks in as the same 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder with 210 horsepower, while a sport-tuned suspension keeps it on the tarmac.

What does change for the 2016 model year are the looks. The new Jetta GLI receives an updated upper grille with its red strikethrough repositioned slightly higher and widened to extend into the inner sections of the headlights, a redesigned front apron, new fog lights, and a revised rear bumper with a new-look diffuser. While these updates are relatively subtle, they are rather obvious when you put the 2015 and 2016 models side by side.

Inside the cabin, there are a few updates as well, as the 2016 Jetta GLI gets a new MIB 2 infotainment system and a collection of USB and Car-Net connectivity.

In terms of safety features, the new Jetta GLI gets a new-for-2016 standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking system. This system automatically stops the vehicle in the event of a collision to help avoid a potential second collision.

Like the 2015 model, the 2016 Jetta GLI will come in two trim levels, SE and SEL. The SE model comes standard with LED taillights, keyless access, push-button start, Climatronic auto climate control, a sunroof, a six-way power driver’s seat, a rearview camera, Park Distance Control, 18-inch Mallory alloy wheels, the Fender Premium Audio System, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and heated seats. The SLE trim adds in blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, navigation, bi-xenon headlights with adaptive lighting, and Homelink.

There is no word on pricing, but the 2015 model checked in at $26,920 for the SE and $29,280 for the SEL. I expect these prices to go up slightly for the new model year. The release date remains unknown for now.
