Mazda Gives Us a Peek at its Tokyo-Bound Racing Concepts
Mazda is heading to the Tokyo Motor Show, as expected, but it is heading to its home-country show with a handful of concepts, two of which look to be race-ready. These models are based on the MX-5 Miata and the Mazda2, and today we have the initial details and images of these models.
The coolest of the bunch is the MX-5, of course. This race-ready rig arrives with a white paintjob highlighted by red, black and grey racing decals, and a red tow hook. Inside, Mazda added in a roll cage, Mazdaspeed racing seats, Takata racing seat belts, and more. There is no mention of what’s going on under its hood, but chances are that this concept car has one of its standard engines installed. The only mechanical change that Mazda mentions is an adjustable suspension.
The Mazda2 concept is a close second in terms of coolness. This tiny hatchback comes with visual cues similar to the MX-5, but in a package that is more tuned for rally racing than tarmac. Inside, the Mazda2, which is known as the Demio in Japan, has racing seats and harnesses, and a fully stripped interior to help lighten this already super-light hatch. Like the MX-5, the Mazda2 likely has one of its base engines under its hood.
There are three other Mazda Concepts heading to the Tokyo Auto Show, but none of them are in the same class as these two race-prepped models. They include a murdered-out MX-5, CX-3, and Mazda6 all featuring a black paintjob with red accents, and black wheels with red lines.
Unfortunately, none of these concepts will be production models, but they at least show that Mazda has its Zoom-Zoom cap on. Maybe this move to sportier concepts is a prelude to the reintroduction of a few Mazdaspeed models. Stay tuned for more details.
