Even before the whole Dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen wasn’t exactly kicking some in the United States. For whatever reason, the automaker hadn’t figured out what Americans want. Instead of giving up and scaling back, the Germans are planning to go on a huge new offensive.

Brace yourself for many new VW models hitting the US. According to a recent The Detroit News report, the hope is that giving shoppers here more choices will spike sales. Dealers are frustrated because sales have quite frankly been garbage for a while.

With more variety, will American car shoppers go nuts for Volkswagen? We could see the return of the Scirocco. At the very least, it sounds like the possibility of killing models like the Beetle is off the table, and that’s good to hear.

Let’s be honest: what Americans want is SUVs. If you only have one vehicle, which many people do, having something that can fill a variety of roles is smart. If Volkswagen really wants to see progress in the US market, it will start to churn out a lineup that looks more like Audi’s, but maybe not so much like an attack of clones.
