As automotive journalists, we run the risk of breaking news that is not quite accurate, as we often rely on unnamed sources and secondhand information. In some cases, the automaker will outright call out the site for its inaccuracies. This is precisely what happened to The Detroit Bureau recently.

The publication recently wrote a lengthy piece about Cadillac scaling back its future development and essentially conceding that it’ll never beat Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Well, those who know the reputation of Johan de Nysschen (my favorite automotive executive) know that he is not one to take an attack lightly. He sounded off at great length in the site’s comments, rebutting nearly everything the publication said, and even mentioning that a “major refresh” is in store for the aging XTS.

While de Nysschen’s novel-style blast in the comments was epic, the XTS mention is the big news here. Previous reports indicated that the XTS would get killed off by 2019, and this off-the-cuff announcement seems to be in direct contrast to that news as I highly doubt Caddy would significantly refresh its big sedan just to eliminate it a few years later.

In its current form, the Impala-based, front-wheel-drive XTS is a black sheep in the Cadillac lineup. Why would Cadillac keep this front-driven land yacht in a lineup of more finely tuned sports sedans and SUVs? Your guess is as good as mine.

I suspect that de Nysschen went a little too far with his comment and likely mentioned a few items that are more thoughts than actual plans. But there is also the chance that the XTS will, indeed, get a “major refresh” that includes a switch to rear-wheel drive and a change in name to match the CT naming scheme Caddy is moving to with its sedans. Yes, this would be a redesign and not a refresh, but we all know that automakers often don’t differentiate the two very well.

Only time will tell what Cadillac is actually planning, but we will keep a close eye on the XTS and keep you up to date on the latest details.
