Volkswagen teased us with a Beetle Dune Concept that harked back to the Baja Bugs of yesteryear. Until now, this was just a concept, but today, the automaker has announced that the Beetle Dune will, in fact, be a production model.

The 2016 Beetle Dune will be available in both coupe and convertible versions, giving buyers two styles to choose from. Setting the Dune apart from the other Beetles on dealer lots is its revised front end that includes a new bumper with a large central intake and a black honeycomb screen, and skid plate. From the side, you’ll notice that VW adds in black trim strips down, 18-inch Canyon rims, Reflex Silver mirrors with contrasting black lower sections, and “Dune” graphics. Around back, the Dune features a large spoiler, LED taillights, a redesigned bumper, and a diffuser that acts as a skid plate.

While the aesthetic changes are great, what really sets the Beetle Dune apart is its stance. This model sits 0.4 inches higher off the ground than the standard Beetle and has a 0.6-inch wider track.

Inside the cabin, the Beetle Dune has plenty to stand out from the crowd. The upgrades include sport seats with orange stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, the newest MIB II infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, a 6.3-inch screen with captive touch, Climatronic dual-zone climate control, the Fender Premium Audio System, keyless access with push-button start, and a sunroof.

Under its hood, the Beetle Dune is pretty unimpressive, as it comes with a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a six-speed auto transmission that delivers power to the front wheels.

There is no pricing info available yet, but the 2016 Beetle Dune will arrive in showrooms in the first quarter of 2016 as a coupe, while the convertible will come in the third quarter.
