Chevrolet is changing how it sells the second-generation Volt, according to a new report from HybridCars.com. It’s no secret that car dealers have been struggling to sell electric vehicles, despite a good portion of the public claiming to be interested in owning or leasing one. A number of reports have indicated that the low volume of EV sales is fueled by how shoppers are shown models such as the Nissan Leaf. Nothing kills interest like technology and features that seem confusing, thanks to salesmen who know little to nothing about it.

Instead of the usual process where whomever at the dealership is in line or gets to a customer first helps take the Volt for a spin, the whole process is at least for now changing in big ways. Prospective owners can set up a time and place, and the car is actually brought to them for a half-hour test drive. A Volt specialist comes along to explain the different features and answer questions about range anxiety, etc.

The name of this innovative sales process is “Drive My Way.” While right now it’s a pilot program, if successful the automaker could put in place a permanent changes when it comes to selling the Chevrolet Volt.

Chevy is also benefitting from this arrangement by tracking certain data. Customers have to agree that the automaker can gather vehicle location, speed, braking frequency and acceleration during the test drive.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, this doesn’t mean that Chevrolet is going to start selling the Volt directly like Tesla. For now, the product specialist just shows customers the Volt’s features and answers questions, but a local dealer actually closes the deal.

Supposedly, Chevrolet is also weighing how to better leverage the highly dedicated base of Volt owners, using them better as “evangelists” for the EV. This is a smart plan, because having friends, family and associates of potential owners tell them what’s so great about the Volt is the best sales tool out there.

This evolution shows how General Motors is willing to learn from its past mistakes, make corrections and push forward on a new course.
