Earlier this year, Mazda satisfied a select group of MX-5 Miata fans with the release of the new Retractable Fastback version of its legendary roadster. For many years, Miataphiles have been begging for a coupe version, and this is about as close as they will ever get. Now, Mazda has announced that it will kick off production with the release of a Launch Edition model.

When Mazda unveiled the MX-5 RF at the 2016 New York Auto Show, it had an exclusive color scheme that included a Machine Grey Metallic paint, auburn Nappa leather, and a hand-painted black roof panel. Unsurprisingly, this Launch Edition model will be identical to the show car, including being based on the range-topping Grand Touring trim.

Being based on the range-topping model, there is only one option available for this limited-run model, and that is the transmission. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual (the right decision) and a six-speed auto (the what-were-you-thinking decision).

Mazda will limit the MX-5 RF Launch Edition to just 1,000 units and will initially offer it to select buyers who’ll get notification of their eligibility via email. Once those buyers make their decisions, the remaining models will be open for purchase by the general public.

The release date and the pricing for the MX-5 RF Launch Edition will be available at a later date. As for the standard MX-5 RF, it will hit showrooms in the first quarter of 2017.
