The Chevy Camaro 1LE Is Back
You might not be able to afford a Camaro Z/28 or ZL1, but the 1LE is back and it makes for great budget-friendly performance. Chevy is using the Chicago Auto Show to officially debut the Camaro 1LE packages, which for the first time ever will be available on V-6 models. Of course, you’ll also be able to get it on the V-8 SS.
Going with the 1LE package adds a number of improvements to the Camaro. Among them are more robust brakes, an upgraded suspension, aero parts for increased downforce, and better cooling components. In other words, you’ll benefit from better handling, grip and cooling. All of this translates into quicker lap times, making the car a great weekend racer.
To the average person, this might sound like a waste of money. That’s why Chevrolet is hitting up the enthusiast community to drive interest, because this package is aimed squarely at them. While the V-6 and V-8 engines aren’t boosted at all for increased power, both can only be paired with a six-speed manual. In other words, if you want an automatic transmission, the 1LE package just isn’t for you.
Getting more specific, the 1LE package adds several specific improvements to the Camaro LT with the V-6. It borrows the FE3 suspension and stabilizer bars, and the fuel system from the V-8 version of the car. The package also adds four-piston Brembo calipers in the front, plus a mechanical limited-slip differential with a 3.27 ratio. The whole car rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires wrapped around them.
The SS 1LE with its V-8 is over 200 pounds heavier, but it’s still pretty quick. In fact, Chevrolet says it gets around Willow Springs Raceway three seconds faster than a regular SS. One of the key ingredients is Magnetic Ride Control, plus an electronic limited-slip differential with a 3.73 ratio. The flashy red front calipers have six pistons each. It also comes with forged aluminum wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, which were developed specifically for the Camaro.
Both versions of the Camaro 1LE should be a blast on the street and especially doing hot laps around any track.
