Toyota has officially announced that it is working on creating a new sports car that will take on the Supra name once more. Its partner in this work is none other than BMW. The latest news on the car indicates that it will cost more than the C7 Corvette Stingray, which really is no surprise to anyone at all.

The fact of the matter is that the Corvette has always constituted an incredible deal when it comes to performance. The car often provides one of the best dollar-per-horsepower rates in the industry, which also feeds into the many unfortunate stereotypes for ‘Vette owners. The new Supra will be going much more upscale.

Everyone has already been treated to a peek at the next Supra, thanks to the Toyota FT-1 concept car. That apparently has spiked interest enough to convince the automaker that people will be willing to shell out big time to own such a vehicle.

Originally, the news about the Supra’s price came from Car and Driver, which gleaned the info from an unnamed inside source. Fueling the higher cost is the rumor that the car will feature an advanced hybrid powertrain, which is a specialty of Toyota’s. Before anyone groans about another Toyota hybrid, remember that vehicles like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder are also hybrids that go much, much faster than even the most delusional Prius drivers travel in their own warped fantasies.

Just how expensive the new Supra will be is still up in the air. The asking price is going to be more than $55,000, but likely less than the BMW model that will share the platform.

Interestingly enough, BMW has been quite tight-lipped about the platform it is developing with Toyota. The common school of thought right now is that it will be used for the vehicle that will replace the Z4, which is starting to look like a hobbled old man in automotive terms. Both the Supra and new BMW sports car are set to launch no later than 2017.
