Many people have been accusing Porsche of getting away from the core of what’s made the 911 a successful GT for decades. We’re not talking about the big debate or air and water cooling, although that’s controversial enough as it is. Instead, people have lambasted Porsche for moves like not offering a manual transmission for the GT3.

The good news is that Porsche is listening to performance enthusiasts, not just consumers who worship badges. Autocar says that the German company is actually working on a new 911 GT, one that will get back to the basics of what made the GT3 so compelling back when it launched in 1999.

According to the new report, the vehicle won’t be crafted to be a lethal track weapon or couch the driver in the kind of comfort needed to make it a daily driver. Instead, the focus will be connecting the car to the driver on a level that is missing in many modern vehicles. One of the big features will be a manual transmission, which anyone who’s used stick regularly knows helps establish that “spiritual” connection between man and machine.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding this new GT model. Nobody really knows at the moment what it will be called. Speculation is that the vehicle will have a narrow body like the 911 Carrera, foregoing all of the aero add-ons that the GT3 has picked up. That also means the tires will be narrower and might not even be made of a soft compound.

Even though Porsche has announced that pretty much every future 911 model will have a turbocharged engine, the new GT will breathe naturally. Autocar believes it will use the 3.8-liter that powers the current-generation GT3.

At the earliest, the new Porsche 911 model will launch sometime in 2016, but likely will take place in 2017 or maybe even later. As soon as more information leaks, we will provide an update.
