It seems that automakers can no longer hold onto the top secret images of unreleased vehicles anymore. BMW had the wind taken out of its marketing sales when pictures of the upcoming second generation of the X6 were leaked online.

The new generation of the crossover coupe from Bavaria is based on the same platform as the new X5, which is in its third generation of production.

Instead of giving the BMW X6 a full makeover, the overall look of the crossover is pretty similar. The roofline slants dramatically, maybe even dangerously, toward the rear hatch. The model’s face has been updated somewhat, thanks to a larger twin kidney grille and headlights, which matches up with the look of the latest crop of Bimmers. The taillights look more aggressive and angry. A body crease starts over the rear wheel and integrates with the taillights. The front fender gains a vertical metallic vent that sits just behind the wheel arch.

The changes are not limited to the exterior of the X6. Among the interior changes is an overall look that not surprisingly matches the interior of the new X5, with the exception of a more compact steering wheel and gauge cluster. The look of the interior is of course luxurious, classic, and yet modern. The setup featured in the leaked pictures shows a two-tone leather upholstery that matches the two-tone design of the door panels, center console and dash.

Of course, the BMW X6 has been a controversial vehicle since it was launched. Many think it has a look that only a mother could love, while others have called for BMW to kill the crossover with fire. There have apparently been enough people who think the X6 is good-looking and practical enough to plunk down a heavy chunk of cash to purchase one, which is why a second generation is about to be released.
