McLaren Confirms the Sports Series will Debut in 2015

For what seems like forever, we’ve been talking about what’s next for the rapidly expanding McLaren lineup, and the latest talks have been about the P13. The term “P13″ was never the model’s official name, but was what McLaren codenamed it during development. Up to today, we knew the model existed and was in development, but had no real time table for a debut. That all changes now that McLaren has revealed the production name of the P13 and given an approximate debut date.

The official name that McLaren chose for the P13 is the Sports Series. Sure, that isn’t the most unique of names, but like LaFerrari, it’ll likely grow on us over time. According to McLaren’s press release, the Sports Series will debut in the second quarter of 2015, putting its debut somewhere between April and June 2015. Unfortunately, McLaren failed to give a roundabout release date for the Sports Series, but rumor has it that the British automaker will wait until the P1′s production is complete.
McLaren continued to outline some of the details on the new Sports Series, including the fact that this will indeed be a sports car and not a supercar. Now don’t start thinking this will be in the price range of the Jaguar F-Type. Instead, this will complete with the upper echelon of sports cars, like the 911 Turbo S and Aston Martin Vantage, and it will be priced accordingly.
McLaren also announced that the Sports Series will bring Formula 1 technology to the streets, and will feature a carbon-fiber chassis and a V-8 engine. The latter will likely be a detuned version of the 650S’ 3.8-liter V-8. By looking at the competition it’ll be facing, I expect to see 500 to 550 horses.
McLaren will be revealing details on the Sports Series via its #BlackSwanMoments campaign, which will also outline the 13 chapters of game-changing moments in McLaren’s history.
We’ll bring you more details as they roll out, so keep it locked here.
