Ferrari Swears Off EVs For Now

If you thought the LaFerrari hybrid hypercar was Ferrari getting ready to make an all-electric car, you’re dead wrong. The proud Italian automaker isn’t going to go in that direction. That’s a surprise, considering many of its competition is.

Oh, in Ferrari’s mind, it has no competition. That might be why this lone-wolf strategy, which surely won’t last for ten years. But for now, Ferrari will proudly declare EVs aren’t the future.

According to Car and Driver, which spoke with Ferrari’s chief technology officer Michael Leiters during the Paris Motor Show, the strategy will be to downsize engines. Borrowing tech from Formula One cars, the small engines will be paired up with one or more electric motors, which will provide a quick performance uplift as needed.

Basically, this swearing off all-electric power is for one purpose: Leiters says Ferrari customers love the sound of a nice engine. The silent nature of EVs just won’t cut it.
