Corvette Museum to Keep Sinkhole

In a surprising move, the National Corvette Museum Board of Directors decided to keep the sinkhole that swallowed up and maimed several cars not too long ago. Apparently the members of the board felt that the large hole had become such a draw for visitors to the museum that eliminating it would be a mistake.

The decision doesn’t meant that the damage done by the hole won’t be fixed. Instead of keeping the dome’s floor in its present, cratered state, the board voted to only keep a small portion of the current sinkhole open. The plan calls for a hole that will measure 25 by 45 feet wide and about 30 feet deep, giving visitors a glimpse of the cave that swallowed up so many rare vehicles. Whether or not any of the damaged cars will be put on display in the hole is still up for debate.

Some board members commented during the meeting that they were motivated to vote for the hole to stay at least partially open after receiving vehement feedback from the museum’s supporters. There is no doubt that the sink hole has reached a type of celebrity status and will be a reason for people to visit Bowling Green when they otherwise would not have even ventured in that direction.

Whether the hole stays open or not in the long-term future depends on how popular it stays. Some of the board members stated that if the hole loses its charm with the public, they will want to refill it completely and restore the rest of the floor.
