The Spark EV has quietly been one of the more intriguing cars on the market, but until April 2015, it was never a great seller. Last month, following a decent price drop and an outrageous lease offer, the Spark’s sale jumped by 848 percent compared to April 2014.

Last April, the Spark was doing fine, considering its limited release in California and Oregon, with 97 units sold. It continued on a pretty steady pace all through 2014 and into 2015, but last month GM decided to cut the Spark EV’s MSRP by $1,500 and announced a $139-per-month lease deal with nothing due at signing to help boost sales.

I doubt even GM expected the Spark EV’s sales to jump as much as they did once these deals hit the open market, as it delivered a whopping 920 new units during April 2015. Of these 920 units, Autoblog Green reports that 94 percent of these new deliveries were leases, which is unsurprsing.

What’s more, those 920 new units delivered put it directly behind the Nissan Leaf at 1,533 units and just above the Chevy Volt’s 905 units.

It is really no surprise to see these deals weigh heavily on the sales of the Spark EV, as the tiny electric hatch is already a pretty neat vehicle. Sure, it is not a looker (better looking than the I-MiEV though), but its 7.2-second sprint to 60 mph is actually pretty good, it’s cabin is plenty roomy, and its 82 miles of range is sufficient for most commuters.

This spike in sales also drums up thoughts that Chevy may soon open up the Spark EV to other green-friendly markets, but there are still no plans to do so, according to Autoblog Green.
