Up until now, Callaway has been able to create some crazy Corvettes, and the company has done it again. Instead of making another car that you can drive to work, this one is a hardcore GT3-R racer that looks and sounds amazing. The official unveiling was held at the Hockenheimring in Germany.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2016 when the car makes its official motorsports debut to see it in some real action. It will go head-to-head with the fastest GT cars in several different series around the globe.

Callaway initially teased the car in the middle of September by showing off part of the nose. That move increased excitement around the project, and fortunately all of that buildup wasn’t for nothing.

The Callaway Competition C7 GT3-R is based on the Corvette C7, which already is an amazing machine. It took almost two years to plan, develop and fabricate the new car. Under the hood is a Chevy-based 6.2-liter V-8 that cranks out 600 horsepower, which is actually a pretty modest figure for Callaway. The X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters sends power to the rear wheels. The car meets the strict FIA rules and regulations, hence the reserved peak horsepower. The team at Callaway says that it exceeds the performance expectations they set, which should mean the car not only looks like a monster but acts like one too.

As you can see from the photos, the Competition C7 GT3-R wears quite a bit of carbon fiber. With the final product, the racer features big fender flares and aprons, massive fender vents and a side-exit exhaust. The body kit could inspire some road-friendly versions, which hopefully pull off the look without managing to appear ridiculous.

Callaway has been in existence since 1976, while its competition division has been making GT cars since 1990. This new car is the successor to the Callaway ZO6.R GT3.
