9. Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid

For some time the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has defined luxury for midsize sedans. The interior comes with superb build quality using only the finest materials, yet the overall design screams German efficiency. At the same time, the sedan provides excellent handling and a comfortable yet sporty ride that is sure to please drivers and passengers. Fuel economy estimates come in at 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, which is considerably better than many other rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans on the market.

Where is the VW Passat? It has been rated best mid-size for the past two years. It’s close cousin is the Audi A3. The Passat is a solid build with many luxury features, some standard; others optional. It’s available with almost every conceivable hybrid and standard engine made. Mine has a 4 cylinder turbo with 190 hp. and 28/34 mpg. Couple that with a 6 speed automatic with paddle shift and it’s a pleasure to drive and the 4 cylinder turbo is quick.

  How ridiculous is this list without the VW Passat TDI!!! Which, despite EPA numbers claiming I should get low 30′s overall, everyone knows (and I can confirm) routinely gets an overall number in the 42-43 range!!! I can get 50 on any highway!!!

  VW has been plagued with problems since they moved production from the father land. The headline clearly states BEST, not Wiggins favorite.

Tesla? I flipped through a half a dozen of this sites luxury and/or environmentally friendly car lists and the Model S/X are not on the list. LOL.

My 1989 Toyota Corolla 4-door with a standard 5 speed transmission got 40 mpg twice on long stretches between LA and Dallas before ethanol was added to gas. It still gets 30 mpg average. Crazy Al Gorp has already admitted that the pollution required to produce ethanol is greater than the pollution saved in burning it in our gasoline. Plus the loss of BTU energy. Plus the enormous hardship ethanol production does to masses of 2nd and 3rd world people who depend on corn for food. You will note that the aviation gas burned by better-off people cannot contain ethanol by law.

In my younger more foolish days I was all for “save the environment” BS. Now
I know better. Get the ethanol out of gasoline, dump the complex hybrid and electrical autos, and get back to sanity.

Every high-school kid who’s taken biology and chemistry knows that CO2 makes up less than 0.05 % of our atmosphere, isn’t poisonous to humans, isn’t a greenhouse gas, and is NECESSARY for all plant life that gives us our OXYGEN to breathe.

Put down the touchy-feely lib smokey-dopey books, read some legitimate bio and chem books, and get real. The world has gone crazy.

  Our 2005 Prius with 165,000 miles on it still always gets between 45 and 50 miles per gallon on regular gas

    Your car took more resources to build than a standard car not to mention less efficient than a diesel, when you see black smoke from a diesel it’s just raw fuel which is still less pollution than your damn Prius. I got my 00 Cavalier and manage 42mpg so that’s sad that my 15 year old car still attains that mpg.

  Finally, someone around here makes sense. It’s amazing that no one in the media has the guts to report on what a waste corn is for fuel production.

Seriously, these hybrids are only getting 25mpg (Buick Regal) and roughly 40 mpg on some of the others in town? That’s ridiculous. I used to get that on my old Regal (1996) and it wasn’t a hybrid and it was a bigger and heavier car. There’s no reason these cars can’t get 50 miles or more a gallon. Innovation in this country has gone down the toilet.

I’m still waiting for Honda to come out with a hybrid version of it’s Civic coupe. I won’t be in the market for a new car until they come out with a hybrid getting at least 50 miles a gallon in town.

I just may have to look at all electric vehicles in order to get that mileage. Geesh. I’d love to have one of those Teslas though.

Have the 2012 Acura TL; will wait TLX 2015; that may have hybrid and AWS; only have 7K miles so will hang on to it for longer: has V-6, premium fuel and zoom; that will purchase much 91 octane fuel for awhile.

Where is the BMW 328d? In mixed city and rural driving my average is well over 40 mpg. My last tank was 47 mpg. Sure it is a bit costly but, unlike many on this list, it is a vehicle many will look forward to driving every day.
