With the impending arrival of the new Volkswagen Atlas crossover to span the huge gap between the Touareg and the Tiguan, the latter now has room to go a touch upscale. And this appears to be happening soon, as a new version of the automaker’s compact crossover is set to debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

This new Tiguan will carry the Allspace name in Europe while the U.S. version will simply be the Tiguan. This model will ride atop a 4.3-inch-longer wheelbase, giving it more room for additional body length and more cabin room. VW also claims it’ll have an “attractive range of equipment features.”

Speaking of cabin room, this new Tiguan will be capable of seating up to seven passengers, taking the automaker from zero seven-seat crossovers to two: the new Tiguan and Atlas. There is no mention of any other changes, but chances are we’ll see a good bit change with this new model. Some of the updates to look out for include new lights, grille, bumpers and more.

With this model carrying just the Tiguan name, it begs the question what will happen to the current model? Will Volkswagen phase out the current compact, or will it give the smaller model a new designation, a la Hyundai and the Santa Fe Sport/Santa Fe relationship?

Other details about the longer Tiguan remain unknown, for now, but with the Detroit Auto Show set to kick off on Jan. 8, 2017, we won’t have to wait too long. We’ll bring you updates as they become available. Stay tuned.
