Hyundai’s Genesis has its Sights on the Tesla Model S

Hyundai is dead set on taking on the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi, and it showed this with its premium vehicles, like the Genesis Sedan and Equus. Now, the Korean value brand is moving these premium models to their own lineup bearing the Genesis brand name. Today, we learned from Reuters that Hyundai has plans to do battle with Tesla using an electrified Genesis model.

The report comes from a conversation Genesis Senior Vice President, Manfred Fitzgerald, had on the sidelines of a recent auto show. He said, “We will definitely go as Genesis brand down the road of alternative propulsions and it is very, very obvious that EV is definitely on the map.” This high-end EV would be just another upcoming model that’ll attempt to unseat the Model S from its alternative-fuel throne. So far, no automakers have given the Tesla a true run for its money, but we’ll soon see a slew of them hit the market.

Fitzgerald made no mention of which model would feature the electric powertrain, nor did he get into the specifics of the powertrain. We do know that this unnamed and unspecified EV model will not be the only non-gasoline model in the Genesis lineup as the G80 is primed to get a fuel-efficient and torque-heavy diesel engine in the near future.
