Chevrolet Stops Selling the 2015 Corvette

General Motors is constantly recalling cars these days, a fact that Americans have seemingly come to accept and maybe even embrace. Because of that, it shouldn’t be too horribly shocking that the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette has been the subject of two recalls so far. The more urgent of the two recalls is a problem with the driver’s front airbag. While details are sketchy, it might have to do with the module detaching from the steering wheel during a collision, which wouldn’t be a good thing on any level. Quite a few airbags are being recalled these days, with the total numbers far eclipsing even the shockingly massive recalls being issued by GM. The big problem with the recall for the Corvette is that the automaker so far doesn’t have a repair schedule.

As a result, all Chevrolet dealers have been instructed to stop selling the ‘Vette until notified otherwise. Of course, holding onto the sports car until the airbag problem is resolved is a smart move. The second recall makes freezing sales even smarter, because it has to do with the parking brake cables. Apparently, when the Corvette is parked on an incline only one cable is actually working to hold the car in place. The obvious risk is that the vehicle may roll away causing injury or damage. Just like with the airbag issue, there is no estimate for when or how the parking brake problem will be fixed. That’s bad news for the 100 customers who have already taken delivery of the car and now must park it, not on a hill, until a fix is implemented.

If it is an automatic and the driver makes sure it is in park it will not roll away parking brake or no.

Beyond that turning the steering wheel sharply to the curb will generally prevent a car rolling more than a few inches before the curb stops it.

Having said this I think GM is trying a little to hard to get things to market a little quicker than strictly necessary.

Maybe GM can add an option of purchasing two concrete blocks to chalk the tires until the parking brake defect is resolved. That’s the least Chevy can offer customers purchasing a vehicle costing over $54k.

To some enthusiasts, automatics are still blasphemy. That being said, everyone does not always park on the side of the street where there is a curb. Think about driveways, large parking lots, etc. A failing emergency brake line is very much a safety risk in those scenarios.

Just throw a zip tie on the module and call it good. Or maybe the standby baling wire.

A car still has the potential to roll, even if in park.

GMs are far from crappy…they are the best they have ever been….we have to get off this mindset that a recall is bad..I WANT my cars company to constant repair flaws and defects…to me and for the sake of my families safety it just shows they give a damn!!! P.S. Jap car companies have just as many recalls and they keep them as hush hush as possible to let their misguided customers and enthusiast rags(paid off to boast for them) to be led to believe they are somehow more perfect..get real, that just aint so any more

Who’s keeping “hush, hush” on “Jap car companies”? They advertise their recalls, too. I’m glad they did the recall, for the safety of the consumers. I’d still buy the Stingray if I could ever afford one.

Wow, someone who actually understands the situation… people have conveniently forgotten about the Toyota “unintended acceleration” debacle of a few years ago and act like recalls are only the provenance of American car companies… those ppl don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about, and their ignorance is infuriating. As you stated, the Japs have just as many recalls, they just go to ridiculous lengths to hide them…. on a side note, the idea of a Toyota “sports car” that costs more than a Vette is absurd…. Vettes have a pedigree stretching back over half a century, and they’re still incredibly cheap for the performance they offer…. Hope Toyota hires an outside company like Lotus or Yamaha to tune their engines and suspensions, bc they don’t know shit about building a sports car.

Yamaha actually builds the engines for the Lexus LFA and the Lexus ISF, which I happened to own. No recalls here, just many hours of driving pleasure and 400+ horsepower.

          Have a nice day!

Calvin- they may be the best they have ever been, but you must admit- that ain’t saying much. You appear to be the one that is misguided. The location of the corporate headquarters, or even the location of the assembly plant, has nothing to do with the quality, durability, or safety of the product. And what is an “American” car? Is a Chevy made in Australia an “American Car”? How about a Ford made in Mexico? What do you say about a Toyota made in California, or a Nissan made in Mexico, or a Mercedes made in Alabama, or a Kia made in Georgia? Attaching nationalities to cars is an outdated concept and probably never was especially accurate. I would be willing to bet you have some skin in the game, either working for, selling, supplying or otherwise involved in GM, Ford, or Chrysler. And how bout Chrysler? Is it an American car company or an Italian car company. Using your method of selecting cars is for people too lazy to do their own research.

American carmakers shouldn’t import security equipment like airbags. Those safety devices should be home grown.

Peter I’m guessing you don’t own or drive a manual. I do and and I live on a steep hill and you are wrong. while it is difficult to move but not impossible to move in the first 3 gears it will roll quite easily on a hill in 4th & 5th and can roll on a slight incline in 6th gear.

One word on the manual trans issue, reverse. The old cars wouldn’t let you pull key unless it was in reverse.

Sounds like GM needs a corporate President. A Leader. Does this matter anymore? You bet it does. How much longer will the seat warmer be there under the pretext of “leading.” These recalls are costing the company it’s future. We are still at the juncture of calling for a real leader rather than to base these recalls on “American made.” Let’s get some pride in assembly. And get parts that work right the first time and last to what seems like “forever.” Nissan is claiming to do this in their most researched vehicle ever-the NV, a made in America vehicle. Btw there’s a youtube Tough Love video gone viral featuring Bret Michaels singing Lionel Richie’s Endless Love and featuring Nissan’s NV including a scene of Bret standing spread leg on the roof as it soars down the roadway. And don’t miss the girl playing the guitar with flames shooting out of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXcrOjO8tn8

and at the same time the 2015 Corvette is stopping sales GM is pumping the car mags full of BS about a new mid engine model in the next year or so ! If they can’t get the current model (and at such a price too !) right why would anyone care about something new ?

    • northstar10

      Feb 28, 2015 at 8:45 am

I doubt GM is “pumping mags full of BS about a mid engine car.” “Mid-engine” Corvette’s have been talked about for years, mostly by car magazine writers when there is a “slow news day”. No car writer has ever said anything other than “the corvette is an incredible car for the price” regardless of how crappy the interior was (in previous years). The new ‘vette’ is without equal for the price. You have to pay 2x to get a car that is better all around.

Its GREAT to see GM recall vehicles that need to be repaired instead of waiting years and years. I drive a GM vehicle and I love it, Ive had a Tahoe with over 300K miles and NEVER had ANY engine or trans work. I had a drive shaft go out and an alternator but that’s about it. Im not going to bad mouth other brands but GM will always get my business.

I am a Chevrolet Salesman, this report is false. There is not a stop sale on 2015 Corvette. We have gotten no instructions to “Not sell 2015 Corvettes” We are notified before announcements are made via the General Motors web portal for dealerships.

We believe the issue has since been resolved but here’s a key part of the GM statement: “In an effort to deal with quality issues quickly and completely, General Motors has told Chevrolet dealers to stop delivery of approximately 2,000 2015 Corvettes to fix the driver’s airbag,”.

It is a stupid discussion. Even if an automatic can shift faster than the manual; there is an enjoyment factor involved in shifting manually. I don’t recall the numbers exactly, but both methods of shifting will get the Corvette from 0-60 in less than 4 seconds (much faster and you will need a neck brace). Paddle shifts don’t match the enjoyment of a manual even if they are faster. and it’s only “slightly faster”.
Look at the desirability factor of older sport cars: early 1970’s Jaguar XKE’s (Manual shifts sell at a much higher price: no one wants an automatic XKE vs a manual).
Walk over to anyone that owns a ‘Vette. If it is manual there is no “introduction” to the car. If it is an “automatic”; there is always an “introduction”: “I got the automatic so my wife could drive it” or “I got the paddle shifters because of my commute, etc.
Some cars should be shifted manually.
